Lyle Everett Rushing (l.everett) is a Los Angeles based artist.  He was born in Monroe, North Carolina.  Country living affords a lot of free time, and many of those minutes were filled with drawing and sketching for Lyle.  Blank sheets of paper or cardboard were his early canvases.  “A new shirt was no great thrill for me.  But that piece of cardboard that came with the shirt?  Cause for celebration!”  He attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and served honorably in the US Navy. These years had an indelible impact on his mindset and can be seen in his pieces.  Lyle has an utter fascination with the people and the ‘life’ experience.  His pieces are in private collections across the country.

My art pieces are reflective, contemplative snapshots of life experiences and natural elements.  They  celebrate the universality of the human experience while also investigating the ways in which black men are regarded while navigating through everyday life and emotions.  I aim to celebrate  the black experience, while also giving visibility to the emotions often overlooked and not associated with masculinity at large and black male masculinity in particular.  I love the use of rudimentary tools: charcoal, pastels.  the connection of hand-to-tool-to paper is very personal.  Equally, I love the fluidity of acrylics and metallic.  Some on my most recent works utilize wood as the recipient of the mediums.  wood is a particularly unique surface to work with.  Because it is an organic surface, it has unique innate absorption tendencies that require a cooperative effort to complete the piece; in ways that canvas does not.  With many of the recent canvas pieces I have incorporated the spreading of gesso onto the canvas  I apply in in purely random strokes and patterns and then allow the piece to incorporate itself onto these patterns.  I create pieces with passion and with purpose  Sharing them is nonpareil!
